St Kilda’s La Roche restaurant has long been a favourite for its super-sized parmas and the generous serves of its $15 daily lunch specials.

This day,  the $15 lunch offering is porterhouse steak with peppercorn sauce, salad and mashed potato.

Just like the pubs and club bistros of the 90s. Good food, good servings, good price.

I wasn’t left hungry, broke or disappointed.

On the specials list is a choice of French cuisine…including Coq au vin, $32. I’ve seen it on many a French restaurant menu during my travels, but I’ve not tried it.  So this is a first. Today it comes with French mashed potato,  and I confess that’s what swayed me away from the regular menu’s house-made gnocchi ($22).
